You are correct the opto coupler is not needed here!
But since they are students, I prefer my 3 resistors layout just in case the make an error.
Obviuosly they could make an error when they connect the resistors together.
So they should check with a voltmeter the output voltage before hooking the system to the Pi.![;-)]( "Wink")
