properly shutting down the pi
Depends on what you are running and the number of files to close and the speed of the disk. Could be 5 seconds or 5 minutes. That means a battery in the UPS. Do it yourself or buy ready made? I found ready made close to the cost of buying the parts.

They can keep the computer running during short dropouts, brownouts, and tell the computer to shut down when there is low power the the battery, say 5 minutes before the battery runs out. Some can wait for a certain recovery of battery power before restarting. All those fancy options depend on price.

Would be nice to have a UPS based on a Pi so you can program it yourself. But that depends on your skill set.
